Welcome Moms:

Thank you for visiting the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Chapter of Mocha Moms, Inc. website.  As you navigate through this site you will find details about who we are and all of the fun things that we do.  We hope that you enjoy your visit with us today.

Mocha Moms, Inc.

Jolene Ivey and Karla Chutz began publishing a newsletter called "Mocha Moms" in the hopes of connecting with other mothers of color across the country that were taking time off from their careers to raise their children.  The newsletter was intended to encourage these mothers to feel good about their choice and to provide information to enrich their parenting experience.  The first Mocha Moms newsletter was published in the spring of 1997 and was distributed to over 100 mothers nationwide.

By June of 1997, word of the newsletter had reached Cheli English-Figaro and she contacted Jolene by phone.  After extended telephone conversations and several meetings and playdates which included at-home mothers of color from other established groups.  It was decided that the Mocha Moms newsletter should become an actual organization and should begin by forming a chapter so that at-home mothers of color could meet and support each other.  Judy Dupree came on board as the fourth founder in the fall of 1997 and Mocha Moms, Inc. was born.

In December 1997, the name "Mocha Moms" was registered and copyrighted with the United States patent.  The first meeting was held in January 1998.

The Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti Chapter

We started with four members in the fall of 2003 and have grown to over 20 members.  We became an official chapter January 2004 and have continued to remain strong supporting each other in our efforts to stay-at-home and raise our families.  We enjoy exchanging recipes, efforts to help our children in school, and especially ideas to grow our inner spirits.  Join us for fun and information, staying at home is a hard job but someone has to do it.  We just make it fun!!!!!!!!!!

As a group, we strive to provide each other with the support and sisterhood necessary to help us all become better mothers, wives, and citizens. The group also benefits our families as our children are able to build relationships with other children of color and interact with positive adult role models. We strongly encourage you to come out and join us for one of our meetings. We look forward to meeting you and your family!

Please note: The National Chapter of Mocha Moms, Incorporated is not resopnsible for the design and content of these web pages.  They are the sole responsibility of our local chapter.
